The Congress and the CPI have virtually clinched an electoral pact in Telangana under which the Left party is likely to contest 10 Assembly seats and one Lok Sabha seat in the newly carved out state.
The TRS is expected to go it alone, having gone back on an assurance of a merger with the Congress once Parliament approves formation of Telangana state.
An understanding with the CPI over seat-sharing for the upcoming legislative assembly and Lok Sabha elections had been reached, said C H Umesh Rao, spokesperson of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee.
The CPI is expected to contest 10 out of 119 Assembly constituencies and one Lok Sabha constituency in Telangana.
The Congress would be contest from the remaining 16 parliamentary constituencies, sources said.
Rao said an official announcement on the alliance is expected in a week’s time.
